Educational Consultants Consortium, Inc. was the first organization to sign up with us when we began our project almost three years ago. Brenda Freeman was one of our original four VISTA members and served two years until she was hired by the Anna E. Gayle Resource Center to continue the work she had begun there. Marquita Robertson joined her as a VISTA during Brenda's second year.
We are still very close to the project and even VISTA member Alan Gedeon continues to work with them as they prepare to take occupancy of their second building. (See 2010 Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Day of Celebration project in an earlier blog.)
On Saturday evening, July 24, current and former VISTAs, and even one of our Honorary VISTA members attended the "Iron Sharpening Iron" dinner event to celebrate "taking it to the next level with work and education."
Young people participating in the Health Education Project, Workforce Academy, and the Summer Job Club were all honored for their participation this summer. The Truly Blessed Gospel Choir presented a program including the "History of the Negro Spiritual" as well as three spiritual songs that "wowed" those in attendance.
Among those attending the event were front row: former VISTA Robert Dunlap, second row: Honorary VISTA Silvia Gedeon, VISTAs Alan Gedeon, Geneva Presha, Friendship Volunteer Center VISTA Nina Wiley, VISTA Karen Carpenter and former VISTA Brenda Freeman. Not shown is former VISTA Marquita Robertson.
